AI in remote interviews, by the numbers
Remote interviews made hiring faster and cheaper. They also made it easy for a candidate to get help that the interviewer never sees. Published research shows how common that has become.
- 38.5% of 19,368 remote interviews analysed by Fabric were flagged for possible AI use. Source: Fabric, 2026
- 73% of candidates secretly using ChatGPT passed interviewing.io's technical interviews, and none were caught. Source: interviewing.io
- 6% of job candidates admit to interview fraud or impersonation, and Gartner expects 1 in 4 candidate profiles to be fake by 2028. Source: Gartner, 2025
The pattern is the same across all three: the tools are cheap, easy to hide, and good enough to pass. For roles where the hire has to be right, a remote interview on its own is no longer enough evidence.

Why detection tools can't keep up
The usual response to AI in interviews is more software: tools that watch the screen, track eye movement or flag suspicious answers. The trouble is where the help actually comes from.
AI overlays can sit on top of the screen without appearing in a screen share. A second phone or laptop just out of shot can feed answers. An earpiece can relay a helper's voice. None of these touch the computer the detection software is watching.
Detection also cuts the other way. Automated flags can accuse honest candidates who glance away to think or have a slow connection, and the employer has no way to prove what really happened.
SmartVue takes a different approach: remove the opportunity instead of trying to spot it afterwards. Candidates interview in a supervised pod, their devices go into a locker, and the pod computer runs only the employer's interview platform.

What goes into a SmartVue integrity report
Every supervised session ends with a short written record for the employer. It confirms who sat the interview and under what conditions:
- Check-in time and the venue used
- Whether the candidate's government photo ID matched your candidate record
- Which devices were secured in a locker
- Confirmation that the pod computer was locked to your interview platform
- Session start and end times, supervised throughout
- Any incidents, or "None recorded"
Session recordings are kept for 24 hours for verification, then deleted. The report is designed to attach to the candidate in your applicant tracking system, so anyone reviewing the hire can see the interview was sat fairly. See a sample report.
